Giving kids a chance to live a life of character

Kids of Character - ABCs of CharacterCharacter is who you are when no one else is near.

  • 64% of students cheated on a test in the last year
  • 30% overall admitted to stealing from a store in the past year
  • 23% admitted to stealing from a parent or relative
  • 20% said they stole something from a friend

Yet…

  • 93% said they were satisfied with their ethics or character.

Help us reach our kids before they become another statistic.

Help us put character back in our society. It begins with our children! GGNaz and Kid of Character are partnering to place these books and CD’s in Sunnyside Elementary School (GGUSD).

Our goal:

  • Provide one set for every child in 1st – 3rd grade
  • Total cost is $3,500
  • Still need $1, 350 (as of Sunday, Feb. 26, 2012)

Help us put these materials in a local school! Mark you donation to “Character” and place it in the offering or mail to 13411 Euclid Street, Garden Grove, CA 92843. Make checks payable to GGNaz and we will issue one check to Kid of Character. Donations are tax deductable.

Meet the band that promotes character!

Thank you for donating what you can to help with this very important cause. We can make it happen!

02-26-12 Sermon – Don’t Forget Who You Are!

We are constantly asking the question… “Who am I?”

There are countless causes, groups…

  • Gangs
  • Philosophies
  • Cults
  • Organizations
  • Influential people

…who are ready & willing to TELL US who we are!

The quest to answer the question: “Who am I” “…is a continuing, never-ending, life-long struggle, all the way from the womb to the tomb.” (from Passages by Dr. Gail Sheehy)

The wonderful and mysterious occurrence in the act of Christian baptism is that in that moment we publicly embrace and identify with a gift that is given to us. The Christian message is not that we should try hard to “act like somebody”.  The Christian message is simply that “we are somebody!”

Be The Church…Be A Light!

In this Sunday’s sermon, Pastor Jim says that to be the Church…to be a participating member of the Body of Christ…we are called to seek with every ounce of our being to be Christ-like.

The Church of Jesus Christ has been hurt the most by those who claim His name, yet live their lives in a manner that is contradictory to who Christ is.

Two Passions Must Guide The Church:

  • The passion to stay aligned with the will of God whatever the cost.
  • The passion to reach those who do not know Christ and to help them to discover and embrace a right relationship with Christ.

‘You are the light of the world – like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all to see.  Don’t hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it on a stand and let it shine for all.  In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

-Matthew 5:14-16

The Problem With “Growing Up”!

On this particular Sunday, we had a wonderful celebration with a family dedicating their new baby daughter. Pastor Jim reminds us, as we continue in his series on the church, that one of the things the church can never forget is that the little child holds the key to an understanding of the Kingdom that we can lose when we become too “grown up.”

In that day the wolf and the lamb will live together; the leopard will lie down with the baby goat. The calf and the yearling will be safe with the lion, and a little child will lead them all. The cow will graze near the bear. The cub and the calf will lie down together. The lion will eat hay like a cow.  The baby will play safely near the hole of a cobra.  Yes, a little child will put its hand in a nest of deadly snakes without harm. Nothing will hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain, for as the waters fill the sea, so the earth will be filled with people who know the Lord.

-Isaiah 11:6-9 NLT

Isaiah describes the new world order by placing in intimate contact

  • the powerful and the vulnerable
  • the strong and the weak
  • the predator and the prey

But there’s a problem with our “growing up”!

“Growing up” tends to endanger…

…our ability to trust.

…our capacity to believe.

…our willingness to follow.

…our readiness to be obedient.

Confession… The Foundation of the Church

As we continue to examine the question, “What is the church?”, Pastor Jim takes us back to the very beginning – Jesus’ exchange with Peter, the rock upon which he built His Church.

God has always looked for someone who would authentically confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, and then has built on that simple, yet profound, confession.

(Jesus) asked his disciples, ‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’  They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’ ‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’  Simon Peter answered, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.’ …on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

What is a church? It takes an attitude!

Church unity

When God is at work in the lives of His people, it’s made evident in their attitudes.

And the most important piece of clothing you must wear is love.  Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.
-Colossians 3:12b-15a

In this sermon, Pastor Jim talks about how God expects us to have an attitude of tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility and gentleness. But when we fail to seek God’s help to adjust our attitudes, we may be left to deal with the devastating consequences that result when:

  • Mercy turns to revenge
  • Kindness turns to indifference
  • Humility turns to self-centeredness
  • Gentleness turns to rudeness
  • Patience turns to impatience
  • Forgiveness turns to unforgiveness
  • Love turns to hatred

What is a church? It begins with unity!

Church unityThe church is a place where followers of Christ come together in unison to say “Yes” to one thing…the authority of the resurrected Christ in the totality of their lives. But when the church is made up of individuals from different backgrounds and ages with different experiences, it can be hard to achieve unity of heart, to forgive and make allowance for each others’ faults.

But we’re not left on our own to figure it out.  Since God chose His church to be the holy people whom He loves, He will help to clothe us with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience – if we let Him.

A Special Celebration to Honor Missions Education

Congratulations to everyone who read all of the 2011-12 missionary books this year!

The GGNaz Missions Council said thank you, this past Sunday, to our church family for supporting missions throughout the year. They also said a very special thank you to everyone who has read or listened to all six 2011-12 Missions Books. It was a fun evening with ice cream and a wide assortment of toppings. Scoops and toppings were only 25 cents, but free for the avid readers. We had a lot of fun singing a few “vintage” Sunday school songs (hand motions and all!).

Knowledge leads to compassion

The Church of the Nazarene has a great tradition of adult missions education. Every year, Nazarene Missions International publishes a set of books that tell the stories of men and women all over the world, from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, who heed the call to serve.  NMI describes their mission best:

Knowledge is key to involvement. With an understanding of the needs of the world and what the church is doing to meet those needs, we are more likely to commit to the support of missions through prayer, giving, communication, and going. (From www.nmi.nazarene.com.)

The GGNaz Missions Council works hard to make missions learning fun. If you would like to read some of this year’s books, email church-office@ggnaz.org or talk to our Nazarene Missions International President, Debbie Johnson at church this Sunday. What Is A Church?

Garden Grove Church of the NazareneTo kick off the new year, Pastor Jim begins a series that reflect on the question, “What is a church?” Many things come to mind:

  • Some say it’s like a concert, a place to be entertained.
  • Some say it’s like a  club, a place to feel a sense of belonging.
  • Some say it’s like a hospital, a place to get well.
  • Some say it’s like a school, a place to learn religious teachings.

But in this sermon, Pastor Jim would like to remind us that the church is so much more than all of these things combined.

…you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light. Once you had no identity as a people; now you are God’s people. Once you received no mercy; now you have received God’s mercy. Dear friends, I warn you as ‘temporary residents and foreigners’ to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.

-1 Peter 2:9b-12 NLT
