Sermon October 20, 2013: Friend

DSCN9354Today’s scripture is Matthew 9:9-13.

The disciple Matthew had some rough friends – sinners and tax collectors.  Jesus was challenged for associating with people like that.

What does your friend inventory look like?  Is it only church folks?  Only Christians?  Do you have any messed-up friends who don’t fear God?  That would be good, because Jesus came for them.  You cannot be a Christ follower and not love what Jesus loves.  If you don’t love the lost, you don’t love Jesus.

What does your life look like?  It takes emotional awareness (or maturity) to be a friend to people different than you.  The key isn’t being without issues; it’s being authentic.  Emotional health for a believer can be described with words used in 1 Corinthians 13: patient, kind, trusting, content, modest, humble, forgiving, protecting, loving truth, slow to anger.

Are we ready to be a “friend to sinners”?  We need to break down unnecessary barriers.  Beware: whenever we draw a line between us and those that don’t know Him, Jesus is on the other side of the line.  We need to recognize who we are in the context of the scripture.  We are like Matthew’s friends, not the Pharisees.  That means we get to have dinner with Him!
