Sermon August 10, 2014: Night, Night Jesus…

Today Pastor Dan’s sermon is titled “Night, Night Jesus…” and his scripture reference is Mark 4:35-41. Follow along:

That day when evening came, he said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side.” Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, “Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?” He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” They were terrified and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!” (Mark 4:35-41)

DSCN69541. Furious squalls still come up.
•They are terrifying.
•They are unrelenting.
•They feel like life and death.

2. Jesus slept!
•A feeling of spiritual abandonment is not unusual
•Jesus rarely shows up early.
•It adds to the terror, seeming unrelenting nature, and feeling of life and death.
•Is He playing games with us?

3. God still says, “Quiet! Be Still!”
•God is God regardless of the storms.
•Storms are not a statement of God’s existence, character or power.
•At any moment “Quiet, Be Still” can come into reality.

DSCN69824. There is a purpose for the storms:
“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” (James 1:2-4)

5. Jesus has hard questions for his disciples and for you.
•Why are you afraid?
•Why do you have no faith?
•Why haven’t you shared and celebrated effusively His work in the past?

6. If Jesus isn’t afraid, why are you?
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Jesus)
