Sermon August 20, 2017: Different? Different In A Crazy Culture

Today Pastor Dan’s message is titled “Different? Different In A Crazy Culture” and his scripture reference is 1 Peter 1:13-17. Listen and follow along:

Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” Since you call on a Father who judges each person’s work impartially, live out your time as foreigners here in reverent fear. (1 Peter 1:13-17)

  1. “Be holy, because I am holy” seems more discouraging than helpful.
    • It’s helpful to read where “it is written” (Leviticus 19)
    • Essentially…
  2. At the root being holy means to be “set apart, different, pure
    • Set apart for service.
    • Different in standards. (To not blend in to an angry culture)
    • Pure like only God can make us.

  3. Happiness can be the enemy.
    • God’s highest calling for you is not your happiness but your holiness.
    • Sometimes you might believe God’s highest calling is your happiness.
So you must live as God’s obedient children. Don’t slip back into your old ways of living to satisfy your own desires. (1 Peter 1:14 NLT)
