Sermon May 19, 2013: The Birth of the Church (Pentecost Sunday)

DSCN9846 smallerThis is Pentecost Sunday.  Pentecost has roots in the old testament (fifty days after Passover), and it is the BIRTH day of the Church.  Pentecost is the day that the Holy Spirit empowered the early Church to, among other things, speak in many languages to get the good news of Jesus to others.  The Holy Spirit enabled believers to go and tell others.  Today, the Holy Spirit is still the power of the Church.  People, programs and processes all have their place, but it is the Power of God, the Holy Spirit who empowers the Church today to “Go and Tell.”  Listen in as Pastor Dan Keeton shares more.

Sermon May 12, 2013: Let’s stick together

DSCN9550 resize 10pctAre you regarded as a servant of Christ, serving for the benefit of others? Can you be entrusted with the secret things of God?  We can judge the external and obvious, such as right and wrong.  But when it comes to internal and eternal matters, Paul tells us not to judge ourselves or anyone else - it is the Lord who judges.  So endeavor to serve others in accordance with God’s word, and remember that every good gift we have is a gift received from God.  As servants of Christ, we should use our gifts to benefit others, and give honor to the ultimate giver, who is God Himself.  This Mother’s Day, follow along as we continue our study in 1 Corinthians 4.

Sermon May 5, 2013: From a Mess to a Miracle

130505 Dan Keeton crop scaledLife is an adventure. We get into various situations and circumstances, and life can get messy fast. The Bible has spiritual giants who seem immune from the messes we experience. Consider the prophet Samuel, a spiritual giant who anointed Saul and David, the first kings of Israel. Some scholars held him up as equal to Moses. But his life began in a really messy way. His dad, Elkanah, had two wives: Peninnah and Hannah, who did not get along. Peninnah had many children, but Hannah couldn’t have any. Peninnah provoked Hannah to irritate her. Elkanah loved Hannah, but Hannah felt the inadequacy and incompleteness of not giving Elkanah children. She felt even worse at the temple. In spite of her feelings, Hannah made an extreme vow to God. Follow along in 1 Samuel as we see how God moves from a mess to a miracle.
