font-size: 12pt;"&gt;Costumes, food, entertainment...lots of fun for kids, teens, and adults. In a world increasingly dominated by unapologetic selfishness, this idea may seem quaint and outdated.&amp;nbsp; Yet, for those who have a grand vision of their purpose and value, striving to be of service is not only a noble thing to do, it’s the best way to lead a truly fulfilling and significant life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Poet William Allen Dromgoole put it this way:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;An old man going a lone highway&lt;br /&gt;Came at the evening, cold and grey,&lt;br /&gt;To a chasm, vast and deep and wide,&lt;br /&gt;Through which was flowing a swollen tide.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The old man crossed in the twilight dim.&lt;br /&gt;That swollen stream held no fears for him,&lt;br /&gt;But he paused when safe on the other side&lt;br /&gt;And built a bridge to span the tide.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;‘Old man,’ said a fellow pilgrim near,&lt;br /&gt;‘You’re wasting strength with building here.&lt;br /&gt;Your journey ends with the ending day.&lt;br /&gt;You never again must pass this way.&lt;br /&gt;You’ve crossed this chasm deep and wide.&lt;br /&gt;Why build this bridge at the even’ tide?’&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The builder lifted his old grey head,&lt;br /&gt;‘Good friend, in the path I have come,’ he said,&lt;br /&gt;‘There follows after me today&lt;br /&gt;A youth, whose feet must pass this way.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;‘This swollen stream that was naught for me,&lt;br /&gt;To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.&lt;br /&gt;He too must cross in the twilight dim.&lt;br /&gt;Good friend, I am building the bridge for him.’&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.&amp;nbsp; And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. The one who keeps God's commands lives in him, and he in them. Here is a summary of their comments:&lt;br /&gt;“It is like a Bible that has been in the family for generations.”&lt;br /&gt;“It is one of the world’s most precious documents.”&lt;br /&gt;“It is a living breathing document with basic values underlying it.”&lt;br /&gt;“It began with some rabble-rousers who believed we should be free, that we should be able to choose our own destiny.”&lt;br /&gt;“The document is very much alive. It is organic. It is not archival material. It is real.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A pastor, Dr. William H. Stewart Sr., of the First Institutional Baptist Church, summarized the general consensus with these words: “It is one of the greatest documents that has ever been written about people seeking freedom from an oppressive power.”&lt;br /&gt;While political and personal freedoms are not the equivalent of spiritual freedom in Christ, they are blessings that should be available to all. Jesus, after all, identified himself as one coming to “proclaim release to the captives” (Luke 4:18).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Fate of the Revolutionaries&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We call them heroes. The British called them traitors. Many of them turned out to be martyrs. Here is what happened to some of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Five were captured and tortured as traitors.&lt;br /&gt;Nine joined the revolutionary army, fought and died.&lt;br /&gt;Eight had property looted by the British army or by vandals.&lt;br /&gt;One signer’s home was taken over by a British general. The owner, Thomas Nelson Jr., asked General Washington to burn the home down. General Washington did.&lt;br /&gt;The home of Francis Lewis was destroyed and his wife put in jail. She died shortly thereafter.&lt;br /&gt;Three had their fields and mills destroyed.&lt;br /&gt;In one way or another, all of the men paid a dear price as a result of their rebellion. Still they were faithful to the pledge they made on July 4, 1776:&lt;br /&gt;“We, therefore, the Representatives of the United States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by the Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States …. The first verse tells of a 21-year-old-soldier fighting for America’s freedom during World War II. The second verse recalls another young man, many centuries prior, sent by his Father to win eternal freedom from sin for the entire world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The chorus offers this challenge:&lt;br /&gt;What did he die for when he died for you and me,&lt;br /&gt;Made the sacrifice so that we could all be free?&lt;br /&gt;I believe we will answer each to heaven for the way we spend a priceless liberty.&lt;br /&gt;Look inside and ask the question, What did he die for?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Memorial Day challenges us to live so as to honor the sacrifices made by members of the military. We value our freedom because of the heavy price people have paid for it. Like wise, every day we are challenged to love so as to honor Jesus’ supreme sacrifice. February is actually a month when there isn’t much going on. Now I understand…the Super Bowl is in February… but not really. It’s more connected to January…college bowl games…NFL playoff games… January is a great month for sports fans. Then there’s the Super Bowl, and that’s usually&lt;br /&gt;great, but then it’s all over.&lt;br /&gt;Like I said, February is a month when there isn’t much going on. In fact, someone (not me) once said that’s the reason why Valentine’s Day is right in the middle of February, so sports fans don’t get in trouble!&lt;br /&gt;Now March is a whole different story…pro baseball spring training begins…college basketball March Madness…plenty going on in March! But February is a month when there isn’t much going on.&lt;br /&gt;So what is a sports fan to do? Just this…take a step back…look around…and see and appreciate what else is going on in the world. Actually lots of great stuff is going on around us every day! Of course there’s Valentine’s Day… that’s a pretty important day! Then there is President’s Day…we could think on that a little while…but most importantly it’s when there isn’t much going on, that we’re really passionate about, that we can step back and be reminded that “every day is a day that the Lord has made, and we can rejoice and be glad in it!” (Psalm 118:24)&lt;br /&gt;In fact, whether you’re a sports fan or not, whatever it is that you look forward to…whatever it is that you’re a “fan” of…recognize that there is amazing perspective to be found in the days where there is just not much going on! That's true in our spiritual life, too. For many of us, our spiritual life begins with a very powerfully personal relationship with Christ. We can feel like we are on top of a mountain and have laid claim to the most important thing in all the world. And that strong and powerful feeling can stay with us and propel us for months and even years.&lt;br /&gt;But I don't think I have ever found anyone who has said that they have been able to maintain that state of spiritual ecstasy throughout the entire course of their life. Sooner or later, we find ourselves in a spiritual valley.&lt;br /&gt;I talked to a woman the other day who explained her situation exactly like that. "Yes, it's true," she said, "I've been away from church for a long time. But you know, it goes deeper than that. I've not really had much of a spiritual life for a good number of years now. I don't know why. I used to be on fire for the Lord. I couldn't get enough of church. I read the Bible all of the time and prayed all&lt;br /&gt;the time too. I found ways to serve Christ every single day. But I guess the 'newness' of it all wore off and I just lost interest."&lt;br /&gt;But then she said, "I feel something stirring in me again. Could it be the Holy Spirit? It doesn't stay on the mountaintop forever. There are valleys and great stretches of desert. What would it mean for you to "fall in love all over again" with the One whom Revelation 2:4 calls our "first love"? The Triune God&lt;span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe in one God, the creator of all things, who reveals himself as Father, Son, and Spirit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"&gt;II.  Jesus Christ&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe in Jesus Christ, who is fully God and fully man at the same time, who became like us to bring about our salvation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;III.  The Holy Spirit&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe in the Holy Spirit, who is active in the world, bringing us to salvation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;"&gt;IV.  The Holy Scriptures&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe that the Bible is the Word of God, giving us all we need to know about how to be saved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;V.  Sin, Original and Personal&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe that we are all sinners by both nature and act and need God's forgiveness and cleansing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;VI.  Atonement&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross and that, by trusting in His death, we can be restored to a right relation to God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;VII.  Free Agency&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe that God has enabled us to turn to Him from sin but that He has not forced us to do so.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;VIII.  Repentance&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe that each person must repent, turn away from his sins, and trust Christ to accept him.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;IX.  Justification, Regeneration, and Adoption&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe that when we turn from sin and trust in Christ, the old record of sin is wiped clean, and we are born anew, thus becoming part of the family of God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;X.  Entire Sanctification&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe that after being born anew, we need the fullness of God's Spirit in our hearts. When we make a complete commitment to Him, He cleanses our spirit, fills us with His perfect love, and gives us the power to live victoriously.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;XI.  The Church&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe God has called his people to express their new life in Him through unity and fellowship in the body of the church.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;XII.  Baptism&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe in baptism and urge people to be baptized as Christians.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;"&gt;XIII. Divine Healing&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We believe that God can heal. We pray for healing.
