Jesus REALLY Loves The Children

Every summer, we have a special Sunday service at GGNaz when we celebrate our children. We thank our children’s workers and congratulate the children as they are promoted from one grade to the next. On this Children’s Sunday, Pastor Jim reflects some more on Todd Burpo’s book, Heaven Is For Real, and on the story of his disciples, who had been arguing among themselves as they walked along the road.

He asked them: What were you discussing out on the road? But they didn’t answer, because they had been arguing about which of them was greatest. (Matthew 18:33-34)

We live in a world that is obsessed with greatness. The privilege of power is sought after, perhaps not with guns, but with money, influence and manipulation. It wasn’t all that different from the culture of Jesus’ day. The disciples allowed themselves to be caught up in the power seeking obsession that had them arguing among themselves as to who was the most fit to be in positions of power and influence int he government that their master was sure to set up.

But then, there was a little child. Jesus brought before them a little child.

If Not Heaven, Then What?

One of the foundational issues concerning the Christian faith is the issue of choice. When we begin to really think about what it means to have a choice to make, a decision about whether to choose God or not, the reality sinks in that for there to be a choice, there has to be an alternative to heaven.

Remember Joshua’s words to the people:

...fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. …if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve. (Joshua 24:14-15)

The stark reality of life is that if we’re not loving and honoring God, if we’re not giving our attention and allegiance to Him, we will end up serving and giving our allegiance to someone or something else. The choices we make today will determine the life we will live beyond this life.

It’s God’s ultimate plan for every single person to be in Heaven with Him someday. So what is the “other option”? What is hell?

The Way of the Cross… The Way of Testing

The Way of the Cross... The Way of TestingJust after Jesus’ was was sentenced to death, Pilate ordered that Jesus would be flogged and prepared for crucifixion. The second station of the cross is the moment that Jesus accepts his cross:

Some of the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into their headquarters and called out the entire regiment. They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him. They wove thorn branches into a crown and put it on his head, and they placed a reed stick in his right hand as a scepter. Then they knelt before him in mockery and taunted,  “Hail! King of the Jews!”

They spit on him and grabbed the stick and struck him on the head with it. When they were finally tired of mocking him, they gook off the robe and put his own clothes on him again. Then they led him away to be crucified. (Matthew 27:27-31)

Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull. (John 19:17)

As we read these passages, we know that the dreadful routine of execution had now begun. What’s going on here? Why did the Gospel writers choose to write such vivid and stomach turning detail? Perhaps it’s because they didn’t want anyone to miss the profound nature of Christ’s sacrifice for us. So we must discipline ourselves to not allow our eyes to glaze over and our ears to be muffled when we hear about Jesus being sacrificed for our sins.

Let’s not allow our minds to minimize the extent of the suffering that Jesus endured in order to express the full extent of his love, both for His Father, and for all people who have ever lived… including you and me.

If there was ever a time of testing in the brief life and ministry of Jesus, it was now.

What is a church? It takes an attitude!

Church unity

When God is at work in the lives of His people, it’s made evident in their attitudes.

And the most important piece of clothing you must wear is love.  Love is what binds us all together in perfect harmony.  And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts.
-Colossians 3:12b-15a

In this sermon, Pastor Jim talks about how God expects us to have an attitude of tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility and gentleness. But when we fail to seek God’s help to adjust our attitudes, we may be left to deal with the devastating consequences that result when:

  • Mercy turns to revenge
  • Kindness turns to indifference
  • Humility turns to self-centeredness
  • Gentleness turns to rudeness
  • Patience turns to impatience
  • Forgiveness turns to unforgiveness
  • Love turns to hatred
